The Rock Songwriter: Somewhere Between Caring Too Much and Not Giving a Damn
It's funny how it goes. Too confident to bother wanting to qualify, too meek to care to show up. This has been Matthew's songwriting story for a few years now. 1997-2013 saw prolific phases of songwriting & full album / demo production resulting in every viable result of throwing everything into the waste paper basket and / or keeping everything, getting rid of nothing and / or throwing it in the waste paper basket, taking it back out, uncrumpling it, keeping some of it, re-trashing portions again!! From the perspective of everything is awesome to everything is rubbish, in this fashion not really wanting to take part in the pissing contests of everyday life on Long Island the original songs have been on the backburner, they get played at home for an audience of zero in order to keep them warm and hone skills used at the celebrations I host: the dog, the cat and the turtles hear my songs.... Music is expression, feeling, art; don't really care who understands the lyrics or identifies with the feeling or not; but then, that doesn't pay the bills!! Billy Joel to Beethoven on the other hand definitely DOES... but I DIGRESS... I tend to like to err on the side of believing in my abilities and artwork these days, depending on the moment - pro-active affirmation creation of "I BELIEVE IN ME" is ALWAYS a better way, admittedly...
When you deal with a mind that doesn't work within the confines of normal everyday people, emotions are like a tsunami, delete
account becomes the only way. The wind and the sun can't be confined neither can the imagination of the artist. Every song is a
problem, because it confines the artist to some categories and stereotypes; white male, guitar, etc. it's easy not to get past that
type of stuff and it's the fault of the artist, or rather the job to break the listener past caring about these things.
Try and understand a musician who has molded himself to be what "everyone" at a party wants to hear - when that same artist
is also the guy who never did what anyone wanted him to. It's a paradox in and of itself. It's a painful and difficult paradox that no
one really understands as much as they like to nod their heads and say they do.
Where is the happy medium. "When will you just be satisfied?" I can hear my wife asking...
